My main priority when running for office is to help reduce the expense of rent for individuals. The rent is too damn high and it’s partially caused by a lack of new housing stock which is related to zoning regulations and the approval process. We can’t change the amount of a new mortgage, which also causes rent to increase, but we can incentivize new buildings to allow for more competition by relaxing zoning. Without a sufficient amount of housing the state becomes less affordable which forces more people to move out of the state. If that goes too far, New Hampshire can’t compete to attract new companies or retain existing companies. It’s a problem we’re going to face in this state and it can be corrected now with more housing. HB 1661 which takes effect this month is a good start to allowing for more building.
